That all changed during a single, pivotal moment in my career. I was managing an important project in the oil and gas industry. Things were going well—or so I thought. And then, out of nowhere, an  issue popped up due to an oversight on my part. The client wasn’t happy, and suddenly, I found myself in a public confrontation with a senior manager.

It was brutal. In front of my colleagues, I was called out, criticized, and made to feel like I’d failed—not just as a project manager, but as a professional. The manager’s approach was tough, maybe harsher than necessary, but it hit me where it hurt the most. In that moment, my confidence was shattered. I remember leaving that room feeling exposed, small, and unsure of myself. It was one of those moments where you start questioning everything. “Am I cut out for this? What did I do wrong? How did it all go so sideways?”

But after the dust settled and I had time to reflect, something clicked inside me. As painful as it was, that confrontation was a wake-up call. Not because I wasn’t capable—but because I hadn’t been leading. I was managing tasks, but I wasn’t leading people. And there’s a world of difference between the two.

That experience forced me to ask some hard questions: What does leadership actually look like? Why did I handle things the way I did? What kind of impact did I want to make in my career? How could I become someone people wanted to follow, not just someone they were assigned to?

It dawned on me that leadership isn’t about having a title or being the loudest person in the room. True leadership is about having a purpose. It’s about vision. That realization changed everything for me. I started reading voraciously, seeking out mentors, and learning from anyone who had insights on leadership. Looking back, that moment of public criticism was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It lit a fire in me to stop being just a project manager who gets things done and become a leader who inspires others to go beyond what they thought possible.

The more I embraced this new approach, the more I realized that leadership isn’t about directing tasks—it’s about listening, guiding with empathy, and showing people that they matter.
