“Your critical path schedule shows behind schedule. How come your EVM schedule performance indicates an ahead of schedule status?”
“We are going to finish this project 3 months behind the schedule. Tell me why your SPI is showing a good schedule performance?”
Have you ever faced an angry client or a project manager screaming, “what is wrong with your EVM schedule performance report?” We are late and yet show me good schedule performance! What is going on here?!
Earned Value Management (EVM) has proven itself to be one of the most efficient performance measurement and feedback tools for managing projects. However, a gray area in EVM that has created lots of debates and dilemmas is the EVM scheduling metrics.
A fundamental problem with the EVM schedule indicators, Schedule Performance Index (SPI) and Schedule Variance (SV), is they are evaluated using measures of cost. For those first learning about EVM, schedule performance in terms of cost is confounding. Evaluating schedule performance using measures of time is certainly more appealing …and logical.
Earned Schedule (ES) resolves the problem by providing time-based indicators for measuring schedule efficiency and variance.
Practitioners of EVM have known for many years that its schedule performance indicators fail for late performing projects. Historically, EVM analysts accommodated the problem by deferring schedule performance analysis to the project schedulers, thereby reducing EVM to financial analysis, solely.
The introduction of Earned Schedule in March 2003 provided indicators and more analysis methods that are reliable throughout the project’s period of performance.
When using Earned Schedule alongside EVM, you'll create an integrated approach to effectively track and manage both project’s cost and schedule.
Did You Know?
Did you know these astonishing facts about Earned Schedule?
✅ Earned Schedule (ES) is an extension to Earned Value Management (EVM)
Earned Schedule extends the capabilities of EVM by providing time-based schedule performance metrics and analysis. By incorporating ES, you can perform top-down schedule analysis, which was not previously available through traditional EVM. This expanded analysis capability offers a more comprehensive view of project performance beyond financial metrics and allows for more effective decision-making and risk management.
✅ Earned Schedule (ES) is institutionalized and widely recognized
Earned Schedule (ES) has been institutionalized by prominent organizations such as the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is included in PMI's standards for Earned Value Management (EVM) and scheduling. It is also incorporated into the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for EVM, making it a recognized and accepted practice in the field of project management.
✅ Earned Schedule (ES) has transcended industry boundaries and geographical limitations
The widespread adoption of Earned Schedule (ES) is evident on a global scale, with major defense contractors, esteemed government entities such as NASA and the Department of Energy (DOE), and even the Australian government incorporating ES into their Earned Value Management (EVM) standards. This versatile acceptance of ES indicates that it transcends the boundaries of specific industries or geographic regions and has firmly established itself as an indispensable tool in various sectors.
👉 So, if you have not yet been exposed to Earned Schedule or have not yet incorporated Earned Schedule analysis into your EVM analysis & reports, it's time to explore this powerful technique and.

Walter Lipke
Creator of Earned Schedule
Earned Schedule came about due to my desire for the organization I once managed to achieve Level 5 of the Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model (SEI/CMM). I was seeking a way to achieve the Defect Prevention key process area of Level 5. The accepted approach at the time was to apply Statistical Process Control (SPC). I thought we could apply SPC to the EVM indicators, Cost Performance Index and Schedule Performance Index (SPI).
After realizing that the failure mode of SPI prevented reliable results from SPC, I sought an alternative. Just from brainstorming, Earned Schedule was created. It was prototyped on several projects for about nine months, proving useful.
I then wrote the seminal article, “Schedule Is Different”, with the idea that EVM practitioners should know about the method. I had no expectation that it would become an accepted and institutionalized method, being recognized by PMI and ISO, among others.
Because of the creation of Earned Schedule, I have received a fair amount of recognition. In 2007, PMI presented me with the Eric Jenett, Project Management Excellence Award. In 2013, I was presented the EVM Europe Award and in 2014, I received the College of Performance Management Driessnack Award. As well, the Australia Project Governance and Control Symposium established the annual Walt Lipke Project Governance and Control Excellence Award in 2016, honoring me with the naming.
Although the Earned Schedule material exists in various forms, such as articles, presentations, and my books and website, there's a distinct possibility that many individuals remain unaware of these valuable resources. Therefore, this training represents an additional channel to expand awareness and foster the broader adoption of Earned Schedule principles.
This course is designed to consolidate the knowledge of Earned Schedule in a manner that can persist for years to come and, potentially, expedite its practical application within the field of project management.
